Abstract

The mission of the world’s museums is going through a process of re-evaluation, in which the definition of the museum itself is evolving, not without the pains and conflicts that these changes entail. Among the key discussions, the role and social responsibility of museums to their immediate and extended community is highlighted, considering their historical relationship with elitist sectors or those associated with colonialism; as well as the incorporation of new technologies, virtuality and ways of communicating at a distance with their audience.
