Resumo

One of the greatest challenges when addressing the graphic identity of a region is being able to represent the cultural diversity of its population. This task, which is strictly for the area of social design, requires the integration of specific tolos, from different disciplines, for its realization. This entails a conflict that Leonor Arfuch raises in Design and Communication: the lack of theory and self-reflection, together with a scarce articulation of design with other knowledge. Rivers of ink have been written on the relationship between art and design –a conflict that manifests itself even in the location of design careers in different universities– a subject, however, quite resolved with the inclusion of design in the area of communication. Little less about integration with science (for this article it is especially interested in social sciences) and with technology, beyond the specific technological study of the profession. We will propose a necessary integration of disciplines to solve these challenges typical of social design, but which exceed its academic specificity.
