Social Technologies and Decision-Making: Problem Structuring for Alternative Selection in the Value Chains of Socio-Productive Projects
Abstract
This study presents a case analysis aimed at solving a complex decision-making problem within a social technology project focused on stove manufacturing. The objective is to structure a systematic, consistent, and participatory decision-making process to select the most suitable design among three stove models: the currently implemented one and two alternative prototypes developed based on suggestions from different actors in the local value chain. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used as a multi-criteria decision-making method to identify the best alternative according to the most relevant criteria and subcriteria. Data collection was carried out in collaboration with stakeholders, through structured surveys with users and open interviews with other participants. The main criteria were cost, performance, and distribution and installation. Model A1 received the highest overall priority. The selected product adds value by improving technical performance, enhancing production and logistical efficiency, and offering potential for transfer to other civil society organizations and R&D institutions.
