Abstract

The text analyzes Descartes’ conception of the mind, soul, and body, particularly in The Passions of the Soul. Descartes identifies three substances: body (res extensa), soul or mind (res cogitans), and God. Though often considered a dualist, he describes a complex interaction between soul and body through “animal spirits,” a subtle matter connecting the heart, blood, and brain, influencing the pineal gland.
