Abstract

Heir to the film essay that runs through the twentieth century since the time of the historical avant-gardes, contemporary video essay, expanded within the framework of the new media and applications product of the digital revolution, has gained an unprecedented prominence in the last two decades. The impact of contemporary video essays goes hand in hand at the fields of critique, theory and cinematographic analysis, as well as laying the foundation for new practices of research and communication, both in the world of the media and the academy. This article examines the implications of digital video essay as an articulating form of cinematic thinking and production, and its possibilities in the field of film criticism and film transmission, through the production of some of its most outstanding representatives, underlining the phenomenon of Kogonada, critic and filmmaker who has developed a particular modality that brings together poetry and cinematographic thinking.
