Abstract

Currently, the phenomenon of voluntary disappearances and its association with suicidal behavior has become increasingly relevant. This study analyzed the risk factors associated with voluntary disappearances persons with suicidal intent in Catalonia during the year 2023. For this purpose, 3748 reports provided by the Autonomous Police of Catalonia (Mossos d'Esquadra) were analyzed where suicidal intentions by the subjects are listed. Likely risk factors were identified, such as severe psychopathological disorders, consumption of toxic substances or previous suicide attempts, as well as other additional risk factors. Of the disappearances persons with suicidal behavior, 46.69% had a history of self-injury and 36.75% had made previous attempts. Likewise, completed suicides were more frequent in men and older people. Hanging was the most frequent method, and it seems that the use of vehicles together with the disconnection of mobile phones and displacement to rural areas suggests alarming planning. This research can offer a comprehensive perspective on the association between voluntary disappearances and suicidal behavior, which could help to propose improvements in strategical interventions. Finally, it highlights the need to strengthen collaboration between law enforcement and health professionals to mitigate the risk of suicide in at-risk missing persons.
