Abstract

Epidemiological studies showed that about 50% to 90% of adults have low back pain at some point in their lives. The quality of life is the individual perception of physical well being, mental and social being influenced by the appearance of several changes in health conditions. The objective of this study was to inquire the Brazilian scientific literature on low back pain associated with quality of life. The search of theses and dissertations occurred in the database of CAPES from 1997 to 2007 and for articles in databases BVS, SCIELO, LILACS, BVS-PSI from 1987 to 2007. 32 researches studies were found for them and dissertations. The findings also showed that the Master degree surpassed the Doctorate Degree with 85% of the production. A total number of 23 articles were found. Since 2004, there has been a significant increase in the production of research papers, which amounts to 63% of the work. The instruments used, which where mostly internationals, were inventories, interviews and scales. Mostly of the research was done in the medical field. It was concluded that further studies should be conducted within this theme, including research on resilience and creativity in the quality of life of people with back pain and also that new instruments should be developed and adapted to the context of each country.
