Diseñando Diseñadores. La educación del diseño en Latinoamérica

Abstract

This text intends to explore the task of “teaching design” in Latin America from different approaches. It will clearly be an approximation, since, like the various design disciplines, the task of gathering and integrating a single hegemonic thought would be impossible. However, it raises the challenges, approaches and constructions that have shaped the teaching of design in the region, from social problems and deficiencies, to the demands of industry and the productive sectors, demands that societies, governments and educational institutions have transformed into study plans, curricula and learning programs. How is design taught in Latin America? who are we who teach design? can design be taught? is the classroom a space of identity, is it a political space? should the ideological thinking of the design teacher play an important role in today’s challenges? These are some of the questions that will be the guiding thread of the text and that aim to place a maxim at the center of the debate on design education: do we design designers?
