Dedicated to the Memory of Dr. Richard J. Estes

Richard J. Estes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, and passed away on July 17, 2026, in that same city.

Richard's passing came while we were in the midst of preparing a book honoring his life together with M. Joe Sirgy, Emeritus Professor at Virginia Tech and Richard's friend. In German academic tradition, this volume is known as a Festschrift. It will be published in 2027 in the Social Indicators Book Series, founded and edited by Alex Michalos, Emeritus Professor at the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada, who was also a close friend of Richard.

Richard earned a bachelor's degree in Literature and Philosophy from La Salle University in 1965, a Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973.

He retired in 2010 as Emeritus Professor of Social Work and Social Policy at the School of Social Policy & Practice of the University of Pennsylvania. During his final years, he served as Director of the graduate specialization in Social and Economic Development and also directed the international programs of that academic unit.

Professor Estes's research interests included international and comparative social development, the history of welfare, global poverty, social conflicts related to diversity, philanthropy, social indicators, vulnerable population groups, and strategic planning. At the core of all his scholarly work was a commitment to research as a means of generating knowledge to improve the human condition in general and, more specifically, the lives of individuals and communities facing situations of social vulnerability.

In the field of quality of life research, Professor Estes is internationally recognized for his regional and global studies, as well as for his pioneering work on the evolution of nations in meeting the basic social and material needs of their growing populations. To conduct these analyses, he created and developed the Social Progress Index (SPI), a unique measure whose statistically weighted version became known as the Weighted Index of Social Progress (WISP). Its application generated original longitudinal datasets spanning more than forty years. Professor Estes's research paid particular attention to understanding the dynamics underlying the widening disparities between wealthy and poor countries, as well as the inequalities affecting historically disadvantaged populations worldwide, including people living in poverty, women, children, older adults, persons with disabilities, ethnic and religious minorities, involuntary migrants, and other socially excluded groups.

Professor Estes was one of the founders of the International Society for Quality of Life Studies (ISQOLS) in 1995 and served as its President from 2004 to 2006. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, ISQOLS awarded him the Distinguished Research Fellow Award in 2007. In 2013, ISQOLS established the Richard J. Estes Endowed Track on International and Comparative Quality of Life Research in his honor. This endowed lecture series is delivered annually by distinguished international scholars as part of the Society's international conference. Professor Estes was also a founding editor, together with Professor Sirgy and Professor Michalos, of Applied Research in Quality of Life, the official journal of ISQOLS, established in 2005. He served as its Editor-in-Chief from 2011 to 2014.

Within the profession of Social Work, Professor Estes received numerous prestigious recognitions. In 1992, he was named "Social Worker of the Year" by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). In 1996, he received the Alumni Recognition Award from the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1997, he was honored with the Significant Recent Contribution to Social Work Education Award from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), as well as the Rhoda G. Sarnat International Prize from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). In 2005, the Global Commission of the Council on Social Work Education presented him with its prestigious International Education Collaborator Award. In January 2014, Dr. Estes was inducted into the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW).

We had the privilege of hosting Professor Richard Estes's final conference at the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Palermo on March 9, 2026, during the ISQOLS Regional Conference Quality of Life, Well-Being, and Happiness in Latin America. On that occasion, Richard emphasized the growing participation of women in Latin American universities, the importance of strengthening social cohesion and peace among nations, and the need to recognize and respect the identities, values, traditions, and artistic expressions of different cultures. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, for Richard always faced adversity with optimism and remained steadfast in his commitment to working tirelessly toward a better future for all.

As Founder and Director of this Journal, I invite our readers to explore Richard Estes's work. To me, he was a mentor, an example of humanity, and a member of my family by choice. I will always carry his teachings in the deepest part of my heart.

Thank you, Richard, for everything you have done for the people of this world. You will always be remembered.
